The Cheekie Chop

I’ve been waiting quite a while to write about this. Yes, I even procrastinate to write about things I actually FEEL like writing about. Anyhow, for those of you who follow me on the Twittuh, you may be aware of this already, but I am gonna ignore all that (like *coughBossipcough*) and announce that I have breaking news!!

I DID MY BIG CHOP!!!*

I’m talkin’, all-creamy-crack-ends-are-gone, big chop. *flings curly confetti*

Allow me to show you, since it is allegedly better than telling you:

snip snip snip

This face I'm making, doe.

Yup, it’s finally done for. And it feels great! Like, fabulously great. What’s funny about this process is that before I did the final chop, I was a bit anxious about having a short haircut because I never had one before. The shortest I’d had my hair was the first time I transitioned from perm when I was a junior in high school and my hair was at my ears. It was a mushroom cut and I sobbed for like an entire day because I believed I looked like ass.

Anyway.

Little did I know that I would become even more confident post-cut. For real, I am feeling the entire frick and frack outta myself right now. Maybe it’s because of the “freeing” feeling, maybe it’s because I’m older, or a combination of both (or more), but I honestly think I look great. This cut makes me look (and feel) sassy. Even though my ultimate goal is to have big poofy thick hair, I am going to enjoy this shorter ‘do.

Other experiences I’ve had since the huge hack (see what I done did there?):

– OF COURSE the HIH (hands in hurr… yeah, I made the acronym ratchet) syndrome is alive and well. All day, each and every way, I find myself twirling my curls and reveling in the softness of my hair. *hairgasm* I swear my hair will file a restraining order on my hands soon.

– Fancying up the short hair (to make it more feminine) is giving me reasons to shop for funky new earrings (may do a post on this in the future…), hair accessories, and different (bolder) color lip glosses. Hell, I’ve noticed my wardrobe has even become a tad more flashy and whore-y.

– Yes, I have gotten a few eye-rolling comments. The most popular being, “How come you cut off all that purty hair?” My usual response (with a smile/laugh), “Because it was boring?” Aside from all’at, I’ve also gotten a lot of “Hey sista!” comments from random men and even a “I LUH my natural sistas!” from a homeless dude who swears up, down and sideways that I’m his girl. I am truly winning.

– I’m also grinning at the fact that the cute guys in my work building have expressed their appreciation as well. *swoon*

– I actually look forward to washing my hair. Let’s not talk about how 78% of the reason is due to it being quicker and easier to do. But, a good percentage is about getting to explore how my hair is reacting to the many new products I’ve bought so far. So far, so good!

If you want to see more pictures, I posted a few more in my Twitpic account. Yeah, I’m so vain, I probably think this post is about me. ;)

So, Pinchers, what you think? And yeah, I know that only allows for positive comments (well, except from TDA), but I’d love to know if ya like it! Also, have any of you ever experienced the big chop? Any big changes in your appearance in general? And if so, how was it for you? Let’s chop it up in the comments. *slaps knee in laughter at my own pun*

Love ya like Dr. Drew loves addicted celebrities,

Cheekie

*Well, technically, my big sister Chyna did it for me (I told her to off anything that doesn’t curl… lol), but does that sound as exciting. I’ll obnoxiously answer my own question and say, “No.”

  1. Yes ma’am..did the BC about 4 years ago..and again in 09 when I was bored and was inspired by Solange an’em, I loved it, and now I love my big ass fro…..Your hair looks great..and you wear it well! #teamnaturalhair

  2. Girl I love it…I’ve been natural for a while. I want my twa (teeny weeny afro) back so bad…but it’s grown out :( (

  3. LOVE IT!

I’ve chopped my hair twice. I only truly loved it this last time, because I embraced going natural, and once you do that, your options for styling short cut increase dramatically.

And YES, truly enjoyed washing my hair while short. I would wash it almost every other day. Ridiculously so. I enjoyed washing it and then letting it air dry. I felt like a white girl.

My hair is back to shoulder length, and admittedly I missed it being long. But it is cool to be able to know that when I get tired, I can just chop it off again.

    Enjoy!

  4. oh Cheekie… u look too cute… i ♡ it!!! i’m wishing you much success on all that product usage and hoping you don’t get sucked into the expensive azz product vortex… enjoy it.. i’ve done the big chop way back when it was just called cutting off all your hair, then again in 96 then again in 2008 & i will admit the most fun is when it is shortest and easiest to handle…

go and get you some hair clips, flowers, stars, butterflies etc.. i like that so i’m pushing it onto you.. big earrings and of course tight pants (even tighter than the guys are wearing nowadays) and low cut blouses.. get sexy with it…

    ENJOY :D

  5. You already know what I think. Just pure fabulousity!

” “I LUH my natural sistas!” from a homeless dude who swears up, down and sideways that I’m his girl. I am truly winning.”

This line. Thank you so much! It made me happy for a few mins of this BOGUS monday morning. I gots the blues!

  6. I never did a big chop since I subconsciously transitioned* via sew-ins and micros for about a year and a half. It wasn’t until I took out the micros (on my way to get another sew-in) that I actually saw (and liked) the texture of my natural hair that I decided I’d try the natural. After trimming my ends there was only like a half inch of relaxed hair since I’d gone from a short cut to the weaves so it wasn’t all that traumatic for me.

My hair is SL when pressed and I flove Shea Moisture products since it smells and feels great and doesn’t hurt my pockets. I’ve never had a TWA, but I’ve experimented with flexi-rods, strawsets, twist-outs, and braid-outs and rocked my share of flowers, bows, big earrings, and sexier makeup. My biggest accessory has been flawless eyebrows. My eyebrows stand out more now so I make a point to ensure that they are as closes to perfect (I used to cheat and cover the “bad” eyebrow with my bangs) as possible. Threading hurts but it’s worth it.

Congrats, Cheekie and if you start a chapter of HIH/A I will be your first member since I can’t stop touching my hair either!

*I didn’t go natural on purpose but I’m so glad I did!

    • Actually, the first time I transtioned I wore a lot of micro-braids. I truly wish I had this much knowledge back then when I finally started to wear it natural. Girl, I was a hot mess.

Thanks for the congrats! I feel like a winnah!

  7. It looks so cute! And soft! I’ve been thinking about thinking about thinking about letting my relaxer grow out *happily team creamy crack*. I’m well aware of what my natural curl pattern looks like, I’ve just never had a whole head of non-relaxed hair as far back as I can remember. I have recently fallen in love with tree braids though, so my thinking about thinking about thinking might turn into an actual effort starting this fall…

    • Thank ya! It being soft was one of my PAINS when I had a perm (because I couldn’t hold a curl), but it thrives in its natural state. I’m so enjoying it. Definitely the main reason for the HIH syndrome. And tree braids are dope! Go for it!

  8. yay!!!
while im not brave enough to to the big chop, there is something TOTALLY freeing about going with God and what he gave ya.
now i dont have to worry about if my tracks are showing, if its starting to get ratty-looking and the dreaded i-cant-scratch-so-lemme-grab-a-pen-to-get-that-spot (or the head pat). never mind the costs involved.

i never had experienced the HIH..but now?? LAWD.. my curls dont stand a chance against me!!!!

i’m glad that i dont feel like i have to have beyonce-like hair to feel attractive anymore. im pretty damn cute if i do say so myself! and so are you!!

can’t wait to take over the city with our adorable-ness :)

  9. I’m on my 3rd (or 4th?) big chop. I’ve never been natural more than 6 months so let’s see if I can make it a year this time. I’ve been too lazy to do twists or coils so I’ve been rockin’ it with a headband. Maybe I’ll be inspired by the links you sent me.

Anyway, I love your cut and I can’t wait to see it grown out!

    • Thank you, mama! I’m rooting for you in terms of making it more than 6 months without getting frustrated! You know your natural eSistas at least got you in terms of support. *hugs*

  10. I’m so happy for you!! You look too cute!

i think this last perm I got is gonna be the last one.. I cut my hair off (shaved the back and all) in ’99 and now I’m pissed that I didn’t transition then.. I did a hair show and the girl told me that my hair was so fine I would benefit from not perming it anymore.. I think that’s what sold me.. I’m lookin forward to it.. I want my hair to be healthier.. It’s so funny, 3 out of the 5 chicks in our pic have chopped their hair off… Need an updated pic!

  11. Cheekie,
    Looks great!
    Like the pucker too, lol.

And it made me think of this …

L “got some clippers man?” B

  12. I love it. I just BC’ed in May & I could swear this post is about me. I can echo everythang you said/typed. My sister swore it made me look masculine at first, when I had the sides braided up for a fro hawk but now she loves it. I hadn’t worn earrings in about 15 years but now I do and I love shopping for accessories to jazz up my look. For the summer, this cut definitely has me winning.

  13. It’s a good look Cheekz.

  14. I love it and it looks really cute on you!!! I’ve been transitioning for 10 months now (todays my 10 month anniversary!!!). The original plan is to chop at 1 year, but we’ll see how I feel then.

I’ve been trying to wear my hair out, but its gettin harder, so I’m going back to the weaves. But dangly earrings and cute headbands have been my best friend.

  15. That picture…*sigh*

Ennehweigh, its ridiculous how much we look alike now…IZ YEW MAH CUZZIN?!

It’s so cute on you though! My curls are days away from filing a restraining order on me but I don’t care…I love them anyways…hmph. hopefully we can steal each others products in Canada! Looking good bew bew!

  16. I love it Cheekie! I think you look so cute with that little fro; it actually suits you.

  17. of course you look ADORABLE cheeks!!!! the short chop looks great on both you and Saks.i really love you alls courage to just try something new simply because you want to.

i dont particularly have a desire to do a big chop to the point of having only an inch or 2 of hair left on my head, but i did do a BIG chop right after i got into grad school–went from hair halfway down my back to an ear-length bob. and i LOVED it!!!! but the comment i too hated the most was “why did you cut off all your pretty hair?? are you crazy?!” i cut it cuz i wanted to, and i think the better question is are YOU crazy tryna check ME about MY hair?? bish/ninja please.

anyway… i loved shopping for hair accessories and huge colorful earrings. totally brings out your facial features.

have fun with your new do cheeka, you look GREAT!

    • Oh, wow, I bet the bob was fierce on you, Gemster! And girrrl, folks be forgetting hair grows. How they think it got to the “pretty” length they adored so much?! SMH…

Thanks so much for the love!

  18. Yessss, my curly sista!

“The curly bird gets the worm”
“Curly to bed, Curly to rise”
    “”

Brava for your big chop! I myself am coming up on 2 years without the crack le creme in the middle of August. I would never ever go back. Tho this summer humidity has tried to play my face many times, it feels good to know that I’m not soaking my scalp in a chemical that eats metal away. And as much as I loved myself in mirrors before I must say that shorter, natural hair has just made me intolerable. You look great and being you is the sexiest look you can have. So yay to you! *throws confetti*
